I mean, you can't complain about bacon. A pound of bacon. A POUND OF BACON. I got the BLT which was piled so high with bacon that I had to just eat random parts of bacon. A handful of bacon here, a bite of bread there, anthor mouth of bacon greese. Tony's was a great part of our Michigan vacation that I will not soon forget. So as you might have gathered, the portions at Tony's are ridiculous. Actually probably even too big... Nah, just kidding. We loved it, it was legendary. Oh, and the prices were shockingly low for the quality and portion sizes. There is no downside unless you are on a diet... and if you are on a diet then forget your diet and go eat at Tony's. You will have to go to Tony's because it is the restaurant most Michiganders will brag about and mention to you. With the portion sizes guaranteed to shock most casual diners you will leave Tony's stuffed, with loads of leftovers to eat later. I had enough left over bacon for breakfast for 3 the next day.

Everything  I have to say about Slows doesnt really matter much. What is more important is that you go there and you eat. If you don't go there, you will, at some point, regret it and hate yourself. Just do it. Get in your car and drive to Detroit now. You will thank me for it. Unless, god forbid, and I've heard that this has actually happened. They run out of chicken. Everything on the menu is gut-bustingly good. Get the Yardbird.. Do you need a reason? It's smoked chicken, mustard sauce, bacon, mushrooms and cheddar. Voted 3rd best sandwich in America. This thing is a piled high melty greasy smokey saucy orgasm. Slow's has a really cool trendy hipster vibe and is doing all the classics right. So when you are in Detroit get some Bar Bq and dont forget the mac and cheese.

My wife and I did the coney island challenge (hotdogs from both American and Lafayette back to back). American has a great coney with subtle differences from Lafayette, and I did like that you could get a little extra beef on your coney, but overall I feel these are basically the same. Lots of onions, thick meat sauce, and mustard on a snappy dog. I don't find either as good as the hotdogs I can get back home in NY. That being said, both places have a great dog, and I can only assume that it's the slight differences that people use to choose which one they like better. As for anything other than the hotdogs, Lafayette has a cool "old diner" feel, but the guys running the show there are anything but friendly. Over at American, they have more room and take credit cards, but didn't really like the owner putting us on the spot as to which dog we liked better. Kind of awkward. Both of these places are a Detroit institution right next to each other dishing out the same thing. Its a miracle they both stay in business. They have been on almost every food show I can think of. But in any case, both are great places, and both worth a visit if you find yourself in downtown Detroit.
